Aqua Pennsylvania: Our commitment to protecting your drinking water
At Aqua, we are committed to delivering high-quality drinking water services and are taking proactive steps to address contaminants like PFAS and lead. Learn more about how we are delivering safe drinking water that is always available in your community.
Understanding PFAS
PFAS, often called “forever chemicals,” are a classification of chemicals used in many consumer products like nonstick cookware, waterproof fabrics, and some food packaging. These chemicals have been allowed to enter the environment, contaminating some drinking water sources, including streams, lakes, and groundwater. PFAS do not break down naturally and are difficult to remove – which makes treatment and removal efforts costly and time intensive.
Until recently, there were no enforceable federal limits to the levels of PFAS allowable in drinking water. Pennsylvania announced limits in 2021, and the Environmental Protection Agency announced more stringent limits that must be met by water utilities by 2029. Aqua Pennsylvania has already met the Pennsylvania limits and we’re well on our way to meeting the EPA limits in the state as well.
What We’re Doing About PFAS
We've been leaders in PFAS for nearly a decade, and have invested more than $20 million to proactively address PFAS contamination by:
- Operating a state-of-the-art laboratory to expand testing capacity for routine PFAS testing.
- Becoming the only utility-owned and operated lab in Pennsylvania certified to test for PFAS, allowing for quick water analysis and informed treatment decisions.
- Installing advanced PFAS treatment systems at well stations across the state.
- Seeking alternative funding sources to reduce impact to customer bills and filing lawsuits against PFAS manufacturers.
- Exceeding federal and state guidelines for PFAS monitoring and treatment.

Understanding Lead in Water
Our drinking water meets all safety standards as it enters and moves through our distribution system of water pipes, but lead can still enter through customers’ service lines or plumbing inside homes. Lead exposure, especially in children, poses serious health risks. As a result, it’s a major effort to identify and replace customer-owned lead and galvanized service lines. We've invested more than $17 million in addressing lead in our communities, and we’re replacing customer-owned service lines at no direct cost to customers.
What We’re Doing About Lead
- Replacing lead service pipelines into homes and businesses at no direct cost to customers, prioritizing high-risk areas to ensure safer drinking water.
- Conducting routine lead testing across our service areas to detect and address any potential contamination, ensuring compliance with all federal and local regulations.
- Providing customers with educational resources on identifying lead plumbing, using certified water filters, and flushing pipes to minimize exposure.
- Investing in infrastructure upgrades to replace aging water mains and improving overall water quality.
